Digital Foundry has analyzed Marvel Rivals, the superhero shooter from NetEase Games currently in beta on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Powered by the powerful Unreal Engine 5, does the game live up to the sophisticated technologies guaranteed by this graphics engine?
Let’s start by saying that the developers have aimed for 60 fps on all platforms, working on dynamic resolution (from 1440p to 810p) and effects in order to stably maintain this target. Well, on PS5 and Xbox Series X everything works perfectly, without any problems.
On Xbox Series S, bigger compromises were clearly necessary, with the value generally hovering around 972p but also dropping to 540p in more complicated cases, also featuring lower quality textures to reduce the computational load and maintain performance.
On PC you can get the best experience, obviously provided you have an adequate configuration, and there are no skimps on lighting based on Lumen technology, which is missing on consoles and has been replaced by a normal screen space reflection.
Performance in order
As excitement grows around Marvel Rivals, which recorded excellent numbers with the closed beta on Steam, Digital Foundry has been able to verify that in terms of performance, NetEase’s title behaves well regardless of the platform, maintaining 60 fps in an almost perfect manner.
Of course, there is still some work to be done because in a limited number of situations annoying uncertainties occur, especially in movements within the map, but it could also be that all this is due to some problem with the netcode.
The situation is different for some specific effects, such as the opening of the portals in Doctor Strange, which produces noticeable frame rate drops everywhere: the hope is that they will be fixed between now and the official launch.
