We are talking about Surgutskaya GRES-2.
Despite the fact that the abbreviation GRES is very similar to HPP, these are completely different power plants in terms of their operating principle. GRES (state district power plant) is a type of thermal power plant distinguished by its colossal electrical capacity. They are located in places of high electricity consumption and are capable of supplying entire industrial cities.
The most powerful power plant of this type in Russia is Surgutskaya GRES-2, generating approximately 5,700 MW of electric power. Despite its status, modernization for further increase of generated electric power is necessary for Surgutskaya GRES-2, and it is gradually being carried out. Thus, from today, modernization of the second in line and sixth by station numbering power unit PSU-810 MW has begun.
How notes The manager of Surgutskaya GRES-2, PAO Unipro, as part of the modernization, the power unit will receive a new electric generator, new high- and medium-pressure cylinders and other electrical equipment necessary to maintain the technological process.
As a result of the modernization, the electric capacity of the power unit will increase from 810 MW to 830 MW, and the service life after the upgrade will be 40 years. Earlier – in 2021-2022 – a similar modernization was carried out at the first power unit of Surgutskaya GRES-2. Improvement of the station equipment is included in the program until 2027.
