In May of this year, the Braid Anniversary Edition game was released, which is a remaster of the cult project of 2008. The original game, as well as the remaster, were created under the direction of Jonathan Blow. Both games have very high ratings from critics and players. However, if the original became a real hit, then the remaster has big problems with sales.
Jonathan Blow himself has given several broadcasts recently, where told about the success of Braid Anniversary Edition. To be more precise, in these broadcasts he stated that the game was selling significantly worse than he had planned.
Six days after the release of the Braid remaster, Jonathan Blow said that it was too early to judge its success, but the project has not yet reached a million sales.
It’s not like we sold a million copies on day one, like you might expect. It’s a remaster, right? So you wouldn’t expect it to sell like a new game in terms of the level of hype. But we’ll just have to see how it plays out in the future.
34 days after its release, Blow became more adamant about the success of the Braid remaster, saying that the game was selling very poorly.
It’s selling like crap. It depends on your standards, though. If you compare it to nostalgic stuff like the Jeff Minter game that’s on Steam, or the Atari 50, it’s selling way better than all of those. But it’s still selling like crap compared to what we need to do to make the company survive.
Jonathan Blow did not provide specific sales figures for the remaster. Let us remind you that it includes not only updated graphics, but also new content. The updated version of the game was worked on for a very long time; it was originally planned to be released in 2021.
