Star Wars Outlaws draws inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima for its open world: Ubisoft’s creative director Julian Gerighty revealed this, explaining how the title developed by Sucker Punch was a fundamental point of reference for Massive Entertainment.
“My biggest inspiration was Ghost of Tsushima,” Gerighty said, “an experience that was more in the vein of Akira Kurosawa’s films than the John Ford westerns that inspired George Lucas.”
“Of course, Red Dead Redemption is also a phenomenal product, in that it treats its open world like a real world and not just a list of activities that are often repeated,” continued the creative director of Star Wars Outlaws.
“But I think what I loved about Ghost of Tsushima was the ability to really immerse yourself in this fantasy where the story, the world, the characters and everything else fits together while the gameplay acts as a guide.”
From Samurai to Outlaws
The game with the biggest marketing campaign in Ubisoft’s history, Star Wars Outlaws will put us in the shoes of Kay Vess, a brave young woman who aims to become a legendary outlaw, known and feared throughout the galaxy.
The tie-in developed by Massive Entertainment will therefore bring an “outlaw fantasy” to the screen, but the way in which it will try to propose this suggestion will apparently be in line with the “samurai fantasy” of Ghost of Tsushima.
It will be really interesting to find out if the studio has actually succeeded in its intent: the appointment is set for August 30 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but in the meantime you can read our review of Star Wars Outlaws.
