With more than five million players, “EA Sports College Football 25” was a complete success for Electronic Arts. As EA CEO Andrew Wilson admitted, this success would not have been possible without the targeted use of AI techniques.
This month, Electronic Arts released “EA Sports College Football 25” for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. As was apparent shortly after the launch, EA landed a real surprise hit with the American football title.
After the figures from the early access phase were already impressive, “EA Sports College Football 25” attracted more than five million players shortly after its release. A success that Electronic Arts commented on when announcing its latest business figures. First, EA CEO Andrew Wilson took the opportunity to thank the players for their support.
In the further course his statement Wilson discussed the use of AI techniques. As EA’s CEO noted, “EA Sports College Football 25” would not have been possible at the current level without the use of AI. In this statement, Wilson is referring, among other things, to the fact that the title includes over 150 unique stadiums and more than 11,000 athletes.
CEO Wilson on the use of AI
In the past, Wilson has spoken positively about the use of AI techniques and indicated that more than 50 percent of internal development processes are now influenced by AI.
In the latest annual report, Wilson commented on the use of AI: “The reality is that our teams are incredible and have developed workflows to make this possible. But they have been amplified and accelerated by AI and machine learning.”
“We were able to capture a wealth of photo images from 11,000 players and develop workflows where AI and machine learning could generate heads and our very talented artists could retouch and enhance those heads instead of having to go through full head development programs,” the EA CEO continued.
“Without AI, we simply could not have delivered college football at the level we have achieved, even though we have given the team many, many years of development.”
“EA Sports College Football 25” was a resounding success, especially in the USA. The title was ranked third among daily active US users on the Xbox platform and fourth on the PS5.
In addition, retailers such as Walmart reported that “EA Sports College Football 25” boosted console sales.
According to Mat Piscatella, an analyst at Circana (formerly NPD Group), EA Sports College Football 25 could be the mass-market title in the US that the industry so desperately needs after the recent decline in console sales.
The coming weeks and months will show whether the success of “EA Sports College Football 25” is lasting.
