Previously, Bungie conducted mass layoffs and also reassignments of their employees and caused at least 450 employees to be affected. This also has an impact on various things.
And one of the impacts is the cancellation of the project that was being worked on by the Destiny 2 studio, namely Project Payback. And rumors began to circulate about this project which was considered to be Destiny 3. Is it true?
Not Destiny 3, Project Payback Canceled by Bungie?
Not Destiny 3
On the latest episode of the podcast Game Mess Mornings, Jeff Grubb shared that Payback has been shelved indefinitely by Bungie following the recent massive layoffs.
This certainly made many people think that the project was another name for Destiny 3 and made fans of the series excited because they couldn’t see the sequel anymore.
Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg journalist, then straightened out several things on social media regarding the commotion surrounding the misinterpretation of Bungie’s Project Payback, which was thought to be Destiny 3.
In account TwitterSchreier explained that according to his sources, Destiny 3 was not canceled because it was never developed. He also explained that Bungie was working on a spinoff called Payback, but that project was canceled some time ago.

Jason Schreier then clarified that the cancellation had already happened some time ago, where the cancellation occurred before the mass layoffs. This means that the release of up to 17% of the studio’s workforce was not the reason for the cancellation of the project and the failure of the next sequel.
While the project was not directly affected, the main series currently running, Destiny 2, seems to have been significantly affected by the incident.
On the same Game Mess Mornings episode, Jeff Grubb talked about the future of Destiny 2 and made a prediction about what the game will look like going forward. According to him, future expansions and DLC will be “slimmed down” as Bungie has let go of hundreds of employees.
Regarding Payback, further clarification that this project is not the latest main Destiny game will be explained in the near future. Of course, this makes fans feel a little relieved even though there are still concerns about the status of the sequel to their beloved game.
