The story is quite well known: at the end of last year Naughty Dog announced the cancellation of The Last of Us Multiplayer, the studio led by Neil Druckmann will return to developing great single player narrative adventures. And the credit seems to go entirely to Bungie.
As Jason Schreier pointed out, Bungie played a key role in Naughty Dog and Sony’s decision to cancel The Last of Us Multiplayer, and it seems that the Uncharted and The Last of Us studio received extremely important feedback that helped the management understand that narrative games are the way to go in the future, to the detriment of multiplayer.
Already in the spring of 2023, there was talk of a Bungie perplexed by The Last of Us Multiplayer, Naughty Dog’s GaaS never fully convinced and there were many doubts regarding the monetization methods and the actual possibility of gaining a hold on the public in the long term.
After months of rumors and speculation, in December last year Naughty Dog confirmed the cancellation of the project and announced the return to single player games. As highlighted by Schreier, the “credit” as mentioned seems to go to Bungie, which with its feedback convinced Naughty Dog and Sony to abandon this path.
Naughty Dog is now developing new single-player games, which presumably include The Last of Us Part 3, which has not yet been officially announced.
