But the layoffs would not have been cancelled even if the add-on had been successful.
The recent layoffs at Bungie were planned long ago, they report sources of journalist Stephen Totilo. According to sources, the cuts were planned even before the release of The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2 and would not have been cancelled if it was a success.
Sources cite Bungie’s poor financial health as the reason for the layoffs. Destiny 2 is currently the studio’s only active project, but its audience and revenue are declining.
And here’s another story
The Final Shape add-on is selling worse than the Lightfall add-on, sources say. At the same time, sources call Destiny 2 a game that costs “incredibly much” to develop; the studio itself admits that generate losses for some time.
According to Totilo’s sources, Bungie began operating in the red after the release of the Lightfall expansion in 2023. The amount of losses was not disclosed, but it was noted that the studio failed to meet the targets set by Sony several times.
Some sources believe that Bungie now reports directly to Sony Interactive Entertainment co-CEO Hermen Hulst. Officially, the studio is still headed by Pete Parsons.
