Game:Killer Klowns From Outer SpacePublisher:IllFonicDeveloper:IllFonicGenre:ActionTested for:PS5Available for:PS5, XSXUSK:18Released in:7 / 2024
Developer IllFonic is now launching its next licensed asymmetrical multiplayer chase. Three evil clowns are hunting seven people. As Bajazzo, you either beat down the life bar of the fleeing people with a hammer, for example, or you turn your prey into cocoons using a cotton candy cannon. You then attach these to your lackey machine to spawn little helpers who pounce on the fleeing people when they make eye contact. If you are a human, you try to find resources for one of the escape routes. If you encounter a pursuer, unlike in Dead by Daylight, you can temporarily take out the clowns with guns, wrenches or frying pans you find. The games are entertaining and since teamwork is even rewarded in both teams, the beginner-friendly game principle is definitely fun.
In terms of content, however, the starter package is thin: with only one game mode and just five maps that don’t offer any special tricks, you’ll see everything quickly. Motivation only comes from the unlock spiral. With completed games and experience points, you unlock cosmetics and other archetypes including new skills and weapons. In terms of balance, however, not everything feels equally useful. With the balloon dog, you can reliably track down people, but the tracker cannon instead of a hammer is less useful than simple pinging and communication.
Opinion & Rating
Steffen Heller says: I like the action-packed approach. When the matches aren’t filled up with useless bots, I enjoy the team play factor, which is lacking in many genre competitors. But I still have one big problem: the scope. Essential mechanics like new skills and weapons are held back to motivate players to unlock them. That would be bearable if there was a varied basic framework. But as it is, I have the feeling that I have to work hard to find variety. The Killer Klowns are definitely good for one or two fun games per evening, but I doubt that they will have a large player base in the long term.
The usual fun, asymmetrical multiplayer hunt, but currently lacking in depth and content.
