It has been two years since the developer studio Bungie was acquired by Sony for around 3.6 billion US dollars and thus became part of PlayStation Studios. Recently, however, there has not been much positive news from Bungie. The current expansions of Destiny 2 – The Final Shape and Lightfall – have recently failed to meet the bosses’ expectations and the planned new edition of Marathon also had to be postponed until 2025.
Major layoffs at Bungie
The consequence: A wave of layoffs at Bungie, with around 100 employees having to leave the studio by the end of 2023. And as we know since this week, this was apparently only the first part of a major restructuring. In a Announcement on the studio’s official website Bungie CEO Pete Parsons announced that another 220 layoffs will take place today. This will reduce the team by a full 17%. In addition to this, however, further changes are planned.
In the next few quarters, Sony plans to integrate 155 employees into its own company. In detail, that means another 12% will soon have to leave Bungie. Together with those responsible at PlayStation, it has also agreed to set up a new development studio, which will also accommodate another 75 employees. According to Peterson, the team is working on an action game in a new sci-fi universe.
Employees demand Bungie CEO resignation
There is also strong criticism from Bungie employees. They are demanding X (formerly Twitter) the resignation of CEO Pete Parsons. The trigger for this is not only a bad management style – an extensive list of expensive vehicles that the Bungie boss has bought at auction in recent months has also surfaced.
