This is a very strange generation of consoles: four years after the launch of the current-gen platforms, hardware prices continue to rise rather than fall. After the recent increases in the price of Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft also announces an upward adjustment to the price lists of Xbox Series X/S.
The price increase involves (for now?) only Japan, where from August 15 the Xbox Series X will go from 59,978 yen to 66,978 yen with an increase of 7,000 yen while the Xbox Series S 1TB goes from 44,578 yen to 49,978 yen (5,400 yen more) and finally the Xbox Series S 512GB goes from 37,978 yen to 44,578 yen with an increase of 6,600 yen.
Microsoft Japan says that these increases were necessary to “adjust local prices to inflation”, these are significant increases of more than 40 euros for a single console, in a country where the Xbox brand is struggling to establish itself, although the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S are performing better than the Xbox One, a console that is practically non-existent on the Japanese market.
This increase does not affect North America and Europe, where the last price increase occurred last summer, when Microsoft brought the price of the Xbox Series X down to €549.99 from the previous €499.99 list price.
