Without much fanfare, Sony has announced the opening of a new development studio working on a new PlayStation IP, an unspecified Sci-Fi game. At the moment, even the name of this team is shrouded in mystery, but we know that it will be made up partly of former Bungie developers.
Digging deeper into the story, some have discovered something interesting about the identity of this new studio. In 2021, Sony entered into a partnership with Deviation Games, a studio opened by former Call of Duty developers, including Jason Blundell: the company was working on a new AAA IP but something goes wrong and Deviation Games closes in March 2024.
Last May, a former Deviation employee wrote on LinkedIn that some of his colleagues had set up a new studio with Sony to develop a new IP, and the head of this team would be none other than Jason Blundell, one of the founders of Deviation Games.
And this seems to be the mysterious studio mentioned by Sony, moreover the IP in question would be an “action game set in a new Sci-Fi universe”, and this is where the ex-Bungie come into play.
In 2023, Bungie announced a series of internal projects in the incubation phase, including an, in their words, “action game inspired by several genres in a brand-new, science-fantasy universe.” Bungie talks about a game that takes inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs and life sim games, the project in question is known by the code name Gummy Bears and On the Bungie website we also find a concept image.
The hypothesis is that the new studio is composed of former members of Deviation Games and former developers of Bungie and is now working on this Sci-Fi game still without an official title. Will it really be like this? We will probably find out only in a long time.
One of our favorite incubation projects is a team-based action game inspired by several genres in a brand-new, science-fantasy universe.
It draws inspiration from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games, wrapped up in a lighthearted, comedic world.
