Last month, Samsung unveiled new foldable smartphones, smartwatches and wireless earphones, according to a South Korean publication AjuNewsafter the announcement, some consumers began to mock Samsung and accuse it of copying Apple’s design in its new Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch and Galaxy Buds 3 wireless headphones. This information reached the head of Samsung, and he lashed out at his mobile division.
According to AjuNews, Samsung Electronics CEO Jay Y. Lee has ordered the company’s mobile division, Samsung MX, to “rethink its plans.” Lee’s strict orders reportedly came after people accused Samsung of copying Apple’s design elements in its new Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro earphones and Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch. They were seen to have parallels with the AirPods and AirPods Pro wireless earphones and the Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch.
The South Korean source also reports that personal actions were taken against certain employees of the company’s mobile division, including the head of Samsung MX, Tae Mun Roh. According to the insider cited by the publication, these actions led to serious tensions within Samsung MX.
“The CEO (Lee) personally intervened after the company was accused of plagiarizing Appe’s products, as well as quality issues with the Buds 3 wireless earphones and the Galaxy Watch 7 smartwatch released last month. The internal atmosphere in the department is very gloomy now,” a source at the company told the publication.
It is reported that at a press meeting after the announcement of new products at a Samsung store located in the Hongdae district of Seoul, the capital of South Korea, journalists constantly talked about how similar the company’s new products are to Apple products. In particular, journalists drew attention to the fact that the new wireless headphones Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, like AirPods headphones, as well as a number of other models of TWS headphones from other manufacturers, have legs. In addition, they received support for gestures (pinches and swipes), which repeat those supported by AirPods headphones. In turn, in the massive design and orange theme of the Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch (pictured above), journalists saw features of the Apple Watch Ultra. It is noted that even loyal Samsung fans were disappointed that the company abandoned its own design language in favor of imitating Apple. They believe that Samsung products have lost their individuality.
The situation was made worse by build quality issues with the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro wireless earphones. Some customers reported uneven gaps and very fragile ear pads that were prone to breaking. After that, Samsung CEO Jay Lee, who has a calm personality, unleashed harsh criticism and gave strict instructions to Samsung’s MX division.
