The latest version of Google Chrome browser has introduced notifications for uBlock Origin users, signaling the need to look for alternative solutions for blocking ads. This is due to the upcoming end of support for extensions based on Manifest v2.
Starting with Chrome 127, the extensions management page (“chrome://extensions/”) displays a warning that add-ons that are not compatible with the third version of the manifest will soon be deprecated. Google plans to complete the transition by the end of this year.
In response to these changes, uBlock Origin developers have introduced an alternative solution — uBlock Origin Lite. This is an adapted version of the original extension that uses the new declarativeNetRequest declarative API introduced in Manifest v3. However, it is worth noting that the functionality of this extension is limited compared to the original version due to the peculiarities of the new API.
And despite the upcoming changes in Chrome, the uBlock Origin developers have no plans to stop working on the original version of the extension. This is because Firefox and some other browsers continue to support the full webRequest API required for uBlock Origin to work in its current form.
Chrome users are encouraged to start looking for alternative ad blocking solutions that are compatible with the browser’s new requirements.
