Nvidia has delayed the start of mass production of new AI accelerators based on the Blackwell architecture. Production of the new chips will be delayed by at least three months or more due to design flaws. This writes The Information, citing its own informed sources.
Production delays could impact Nvidia’s biggest customers like Meta✴ Platforms, Google, and Microsoft. The report said Nvidia had already notified Microsoft this week that production of its new AI accelerators would be delayed, a Microsoft insider confirmed on condition of anonymity. The issue appears to be a design flaw in the chip that requires fixing, testing, and re-entering production.
The production delays mean that large shipments of Blackwell-based AI accelerators won’t begin until the first quarter of 2025. An Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment on whether the company had informed customers of the delays, but said the company plans to ramp up production later this year. Officials from Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta✴ declined to comment.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Nvidia was preparing to begin shipping AI accelerators based on Blackwell chips. According to available information, Nvidia has already started shipping samples of the new accelerators, with volume shipments planned for the fourth quarter of this year.
