Traditionally, the release calendar for video games is always full in the fall and at Christmas. All major franchises want to release their games between October and December, which is why we have always been able to look forward to the release of a new Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed during the Christmas season.
The Xbox’s calendar is also jam-packed this year: In addition to recently acquired giant brands such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, a new action role-playing game from “Fallout: New Vegas” makers Obsidian was also due to be released in the fall. And that would have even been in the Game Pass from day one. But that’s not going to happen now. And Microsoft has a more than understandable reason for the postponement.
Obsidian RPG Avowed is postponed
As Xbox announced on X (formerly Twitter), they have decided not to release the new role-playing game from Obisidan Entertainment this year. The title, which is strongly reminiscent of previous games from the developer studio and is even compared by some to “The Elder Scrolls”, was actually supposed to be released in autumn 2024.
However, the calendar of upcoming releases is so full that a postponement has now been agreed. Because there are still so many games to offer this year, they want to postpone Avowed in order to “give players’ backlogs time to breathe”. But how long do fans have to wait?

When is Avowed coming out?
The new Obsidian RPG was originally supposed to be released in fall 2024. The new release date is set for February 18, 2025. So fans don’t have to wait too long. By the way: Avowed will also be available in the Game Pass from day one and can therefore be played “almost for free”. And this despite the fact that there has been repeated criticism of the price increase for the service recently.
The postponement will make room for the many other Xbox games. The release calendar is already jam-packed: The major expansion “The War Within” for World of Warcraft will be released in just a few weeks. In September we can expect Age of Mythology: Retold and ARA: History Untold, before Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred and, of course, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 follow a month later.
The release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and the first DLC for Starfield is also scheduled for this year. That’s why it was probably the best decision to postpone Avowed a few months. Otherwise it might have been lost in the flood of big AAA releases. What do you think about the postponement: justified or not?
