It may not have been Nintendo’s most commercially successful system, but the Nintendo 64 has left an important mark of its passage, having hosted some of the most important video games ever during its life cycle. In short, we are faced with a console that in its own way has left a good memory of itself.
We’ve already told you about some really bad games for Nintendo 64, but now it’s time to do the reverse and mention its 5 best titles, true masterpieces that have managed to enthuse critics and audiences around the world:
Banjo-Kazooie
At a time when Super Mario 64 dominated the platforming scene, Banjo-Kazooie proved so great that it became the main alternative to the Nintendo classic. Rare created one of the best games in its history, an adventure full of variety, with textbook level design and humorous atmospheres that immediately won over anyone who approached the game for the first time. It’s a real shame that there don’t seem to be any new Banjo-Kazooie games on the horizon: it would be really nice to see this dynamic duo back on the scene.
Perfect Dark
Rare wasn’t satisfied with leaving its mark with the incredible GoldenEye 007: the British studio will reach new heights of quality in the FPS field with Perfect Dark, a true evolution of its “predecessor” and even more explosive in terms of gameplay and level design. The adventure starring Joanna Dark has established itself as one of the best FPS ever made, a pearl that came out a little late in the life cycle of the N64 and which therefore deserved even more popularity and consideration among the general public.
Star Fox 64
Known in Europe as Lylat Wars, Star Fox 64 was a true masterpiece of rail-based shooters, graced with masterful gameplay that literally kept you glued to the screen thanks to its spectacular nature and immediacy. With plenty of alternate paths to discover and a high level of replayability, the second game starring Fox McCloud and his gang has established itself as a must-have for any self-respecting N64 fan.
Super Mario 64
Of course, his majesty Super Mario 64 couldn’t be missing. We return to an era in which a new console was immediately launched on the market with an authentic killer application that alone justified its purchase. Super Mario 64 changed forever the face of Platforms and video games in general, forever popularizing 3D graphics after various past experiments and offering a freedom of action and movement never seen before in a game of this type. There’s no denying it, a Nintendo truly at the top of its game.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Nintendo wasn’t satisfied with having revolutionized everything with Super Mario 64 and, if possible, with The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time they have pushed themselves to an even higher, even more incredible level. For the first time The Legend of Zelda embraces three dimensions and is the beginning of one of the most immense adventures that the videogame world has ever offered to its fans. With its memorable dungeons, perfectly modernized gameplay, and an audiovisual direction that still sets standards today, Ocarina of Time is a true thrill from start to finish.
