Bungie’s layoffs and crisis are at the center of Stephen Totilo’s new report: the GameFile journalist has collected testimonies from some former Bungie employees who point to the huge sum invested by Sony to acquire the Destiny company as the main cause of the current, delicate situation.
According to several former members of the American software house who prefer to remain anonymous, the 3.6 billion dollars spent by Sony to acquire Bungie would represent the true ‘original sin’ of the crisis that exploded with the firing of 220 employees and the corporate reorganization that will lead Bungie to lose its independence from PlayStation Studios.
“I really think Sony paid way too much for Bungie,” reflects a former member of the US team before adding that “in the process of the acquisition, Bungie’s top brass must have promised a lot of things that, however, it was clear they were not going to be able to deliver.”
Another anonymous source cited by Totilo adds that “from a strictly financial point of view, it’s clear that it wouldn’t have worked. Destiny is a monstrously complex game, it’s an expensive machine to maintain. And then, despite all the effort, The Final Form sold less than The Eclipse”. A third former Bungie member recalls the delicate steps that led to the Destiny team’s entry into the PlayStation family, explaining that “executives raised the bar on Bungie’s financial and growth prospects while discussing the acquisition with Sony, the latest layoffs and heavy cuts in operating costs are nothing but the reflection of the initiatives taken by Sony to stop the hemorrhaging of losses”.
In recent days, Stephen Totilo shared further insights into Bungie’s future, explaining how Destiny 2 will change following the layoffs and Bungie’s transition to the management of PlayStation Studios.
