Kingston has announced a new NV3 solid-state drive with a PCIe 4.0 interface. According to the manufacturer, the NV3 SSD is designed for high-speed, low-power tasks and will be available in capacities from 500 GB to 4 TB.
The NV3 is the successor to the NV2, which was criticized for its poor performance and was not recommended by experts for use due to overheating, especially in laptops or as a primary storage device. The new SSD, according to message Tom’s Hardware promises improved performance with sequential read speeds of up to 6,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 5,000 MB/s for the 2 TB and 4 TB versions.
The NV3’s endurance numbers also look good. The 500GB variant is rated at 160 TBW, while the 1TB and 2TB variants are rated at 320 TBW and 640 TBW, respectively. The 4TB version will get 1,280 TBW.
The official launch of Kingston NV3 is rumored to be on August 5th. Some overseas retailers have already posted preliminary price tags of $49.99 for the 500GB and $69.82 for the 1TB variant. However, these prices may only be indicative, as the manufacturer’s suggested retail prices for NV3 for different SSD capacities have not yet been announced.
“It will be interesting to see how the Kingston NV3 compares to its competitors,” the experts note. Given that such drives are often chosen for budget builds and by OEMs, it is important that the NV3 SSD solves the problems of the previous generation NV2, providing the claimed low power consumption and good value for money.
