Nightcrawler, who created and runs ROMhacking.net, announced that the site has stopped accepting ROM file submissions and will only upload news in the future.
ROMhacking.net contributors regularly submit tweaks for ROM files that include bug fixes, additions, and even translations of games that were never released in certain languages such as English or Spanish.
Nightcrawler said that the ROMhacking.net collection can be found on the Internet Archive, concentrated in a single 11.7GB zip file. He added that the forum will remain and the downloads will remain available for now.
Nightcrawler blamed the shutdown of ROMhacking.net on “24/7 usage, endless queues, and endless inboxes” as well as “legal burdens.”
Nightcrawler also accused members of the group that offered to take over ROMhacking.net of doxxing him and planning to remove him from the site. One of the group members denied his allegations in a series of posts on X.
