Reportedly TASS, RBC«Vedomosti», «Kommersant” and other publications, the YouTube video service has stopped playing videos in 1080p and higher formats for most Russian users. The problem is fixed when using any popular desktop browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Yandex Browser.
Let us recall that since the end of July, Russians have been facing problems interacting with the YouTube platform. Some domestic Internet providers assumed that this could be due to the wear and tear of Google equipment located in Russia, since the American company has not been updating it since 2022. In addition, a recent TACC report states: “The American video hosting YouTube has stopped playing high-quality videos in almost all browsers running in the desktop version in Russia.”
However, Google, commenting on this issue, stated that the difficulties with video playback in Russia are not a consequence of any actions on the part of the IT giant. In addition, some providers associate the problems “with issues of regulation of foreign online services and their interaction with Roskomnadzor.” According to Mediascope, despite the difficulties in YouTube’s operation, the video hosting service’s reach among Russians did not decrease for the week from July 22 to 28 and amounted to 82.5 million people.
Earlier, State Duma committee member Alexander Khinshtein said that YouTube download speed in the country could drop to 40% in July and to 70% in early August. The Kremlin denied any connection between the problem with video playback on YouTube and the possible blocking of the service. The Ministry of Digital Development also previously reported that it had no plans to block the service.
