When it comes to first-person shooters, one of the first names that comes up is always Half-Life, a franchise that has made history in the genre, innovating it both in narrative and gameplay, and in the entire video game medium. Today we thought it would be a good idea to delve into the meaning of its title, which many might not understand.
What does Half-Life mean?
Be honest, the first translation that came to mind when you first read the title of Half-Life was “Half Life”, right? It’s more than understandable, especially if you’re not familiar with some basic concepts of nuclear physics, particularly radioactive decay. In reality, Half-Life means “half-life” (or decay time), a term which indicates the period of time necessary for a certain quantity of a radioactive element (or at least particles subject to decay) to be reduced to half of the initial quantity. In other words, after this period of time, half of the initially present radioactive atoms (or particles) have decayed and the remaining half are still intact.
The title of Half-Life, therefore, is a clear reference to the narrative and themes of the video game, which features a theoretical physicist, Gordon Freeman, who manages to survive the failure of an experiment and an unexpected resonance cascade that opens a dimensional rift, destroys much of the structure of Black Mesa and brings about the invasion of aliens from another world.
Once you understand the meaning and translation of the Half-Life title, you can also understand the meaning of the series’ logo, the iconic orange letter λ that appears practically everywhere in the promotional material for the series’ video games. You can also find it in disguise in the Half-Life: Alyx logo – can you spot it? λ represents the decay constant that appears in the equation for calculating the decay time of a given element or particle. We’ll stop here because this is not the right place to delve into certain concepts (if you’ve studied certain topics we have nothing to teach you, while if you want to delve deeper there are more suitable ways to do it), but at least now you can reel off these curiosities to make a good impression on your gamer friends!
