SEGA’s latest console is famous for its arcade-perfect conversions of arcade games, but the Dreamcast has hosted not only ports of great games but also new titles of great depth. And it is on these that we want to focus in our new top 5.
Please note: as mentioned at the beginning, we have chosen to focus only on original productions, thus excluding masterpieces such as F355 Challenge, SoulCalibur, The House of the Dead 2 and many other titles created in the arcade and then converted to Dreamcast.
Jet Set Radio
We’ve all been waiting for its return: SEGA has announced a reboot of Jet Set Radio and we’re here drooling waiting to play it.And the reason is simple, Jet Set Radio was a masterpiece in 2000, a colorful and frenetic game, with a unique graphic style for the time. It was never a commercial hit with millions of copies, but on Dreamcast it was a game to have absolutely.
Resident Evil Code Veronica
The forgotten Resident Evil, it is not known why Capcom has not (yet?) re-released Resident Evil Code Veronica as a remake or remaster. With rumors of copyright issues, the game was developed by Capcom with the help of SEGA and released on the Dreamcast before coming to other platforms with a series of additional content. The true sequel to Resident Evil 2 was a technically absurd game in 2000, with a story full of twists and turns and gameplay that gave a glimpse of the future of Resident Evil, which would then materialize with RE4 a good five years later.
Sonic Adventures 2
The first Sonic Adventures was released as a launch game in 1998 and was a moderate success, the sequel was instead the swan song of the Dreamcast, released when SEGA had already announced the discontinuation of the console and its farewell to the hardware market. It didn’t sell as well as hoped, but when it comes to 3D platformers at the time, Sonic Adventures 2 had very few rivals.
Phantasy Star Online
Online multiplayer role-playing games were popular on PC in the late 1990s and early 2000s while they had no market on consoles, also due to the technical limitations of the platforms. With Phantasy Star Online everything changes and online gaming on consoles becomes a solid reality.
Shenmue
Yu Suzuki’s great dream was shattered too soon: Shenmue is a game that was the result of a very long gestation that began in the mid-90s as a spin-off RPG of Virtua Fighter for Saturn, before evolving into something completely different. Shenmue was released at the end of 1999 in Japan and for many it is the most beautiful game of the end of the millennium (and beyond), the critics were enthusiastic but the public (almost) passed by.A sequel will be released two years later on Xbox while Shenmue 3 arrives in 2019, 20 years after the launch of the first chapter. Currently the saga is stuck in the pits but we still hope for Shenmue 4.
