After the earthquake at Bungie, there are many rumors about what will happen next with the studio and also with Destiny 2. But the time of major expansions seems to be over at least.
Things have been pretty rough at Bungie – 220 employees were let go, another 155 were transferred to a new Sony studio. All the results of tragic mismanagement, as many claim. The fact is that Bungie has driven its main draw, Destiny 2, into the ground. The Lightfall expansion sold poorly and was not well received by fans. The Final Shape was significantly better, but the sales figures were not really convincing. Apparently The Final Shape sold even worse than the much-maligned Lightfall.
At the same time, ongoing projects were scrapped in order to cut costs, including Destiny 3, which was said to have never been in development. Project Payback, which appeared sporadically in reports, was said to be merely a Destiny spin-off.
New reports now suggest that Bungie is also planning far-reaching changes to Destiny 2 and, above all, wants to move away from the annual expansions, which have recently been financial failures. According to Bloomberg, there was a meeting at Bungie in which exactly this decision was explained. At least, this is what both current and former employees of the studio have confirmed.
It would be a good time for Bungie to revise the concept, as the long-running saga of light and darkness has come to an end with The Final Shape. According to Bloomberg, Bungie wants to at least start releasing free content updates in the style of Into The Light in the coming months. The latter brought the Onslaught mode into the game, among other things, and was generally well received by players.
In any case, Bungie is under pressure with Destiny 2 and it will be interesting to see what the studio comes up with in the future. There is plenty to do, because just when the community had become somewhat reconciled with The Final Shape, a lot of china was broken with the layoffs and everything else.
