Larian Studios has already started working on its next games, although their development will take a long time, including because of one rather big “problem” that turned out to be Baldur’s Gate 3. The beloved third chapter of the saga was perhaps the game that most embodied the passion of the developer studio, with so many possibilities and incredible attention to detail that it now creates a considerable “headache” for its future projects.
In an interview with PC Gamer, head of story Adam Smith explained that the studio’s main challenge at the moment is coming up with new ideas that haven’t yet been implemented in Baldur’s Gate 3:
One of our biggest problems right now is that whenever we talk about something, we say we already did it in Baldur’s Gate 3. And if you think about it, we find that a lot of it was already done in Baldur’s Gate 3.
According to Smith, this is far from the first time the studio has had to deal with this curious problem: something similar happened during the development of Baldur’s Gate 3 itself, and also caused a lot of headaches during the creation of Divinity Original Sin 2. According to the developer, Larian does not want to “make content just for the sake of making it”, but strives to ensure that players always have a new experience, and the company itself has never been inclined to repeat itself.
The enormous amount of work that went into creating an RPG that fans can get excited about ironically creates problems for future games, as Larian always strives to create something unique and innovative when developing their new games. Perhaps this is why Larian ultimately decided to abandon Baldur’s Gate 4: the desire to create something unique is what really drives these developers.
