In an interview, Pocketpair spoke about the financial success of “Palworld”. This would, at least in theory, enable the studio to become a developer of major triple-A games.
With the role-playing survival mix “Palworld”, the developers of PocketPair delivered the first big surprise hit of the video game year 2024.
Six days after its release in January, “Palworld” had sold more than eight million copies. By the end of February, sales had risen to an impressive 25 million copies. An impressive success that changed a lot for the Japanese studio.
As CEO Takuro Mizobe told Game Spark (via Gamefront) confirmed, PocketPair made enough profits with “Palworld” to easily turn its next project into a major triple-A title.
That’s why the developers have no interest in triple productions
However, the budgets for a major triple-A title remain theoretical for the developers at Pocketpair. As Mizobe explained, the team has no interest in making the transition to a triple-A studio.
On the one hand, despite the revenue from “Palworld”, Pocketpair is not structurally designed to realize large projects on a triple-A scale.
At the same time, the CEO of Pocketpair pointed out that, in his opinion, triple-A titles are now too difficult to realize. A situation that Mizobe attributes to both the long development cycles and the rising costs. A combination that means that Pocketpair continues to rely on small teams and creative projects.
According to Mizobe, even small teams are now able to develop high-quality and successful games.
As the CEO added, Pocketpair’s growth so far has been primarily due to fans of indie games. Therefore, the developers want to “give something back” to the indie community with their next project. However, Mizobe did not go into more detail in this regard.
The CEO also left it open as to when we can expect the unveiling of Pocketpair’s next project. Especially since the studio is still working on updates and new content for “Palworld”. In addition, a teaser from the studio at the end of June indicated that the surprise hit will be made available for the PS4 and PS5.
However, an announcement or a concrete date is still pending.
