Are you about to buy a new PlayStation 5 and have come across a Digital Edition, perhaps without having the slightest idea of what it is? Let’s try to clarify the peculiarities of this particular version of Sony’s latest generation console.
When we talk about PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, we are referring to one of the two launch models of the Sony console, that is, the model that is today commonly referred to as ‘Fat’: we are referring to the larger one and the one that is less commonly found in stores today, given that it has been replaced by the smaller model nicknamed ‘Slim’.
But let’s get back to the point: what does PlayStation 5 Digital Edition mean? This term refers to the original PlayStation 5 model that has one and only one difference from the standard version: in this case, in fact, the disc reader is completely absent. As the name itself suggests, therefore, those who buy the Digital Edition of PS5 can only and exclusively play games in physical format and there is no way to use the titles on disc. Although for some users this may seem like a huge disadvantage, in reality it is a model that has a certain utility for those who have now switched to digital, given that the price of this model is lower than the one with an optical reader.
It should be noted that this difference is only noticeable on the first PlayStation 5 model, since the Slim version works differently. In this case, in fact, the player can be purchased separately and therefore purchasing the version that does not include this accessory does not represent a major limitation in terms of the future.
