Modder James Channel has become famous for his crazy hardware modifications. He is the one who created the famous “Nintendo PlayStation” console and a Game Boy with a CRT screen. Yes, James’s latest effort is the transformation of Nintendo’s old portable console into a kind of monster, which we defy anyone to carry in their pocket. The result would probably horrify Gunpey Yokoi, the designer of the Game Boy, but it has its charm nonetheless.
Show with hardware
But how did the modder do it? James took a brand new CRT screen purchased on AliExpress (it’s simply a video intercom screen) and started working on connecting it to the Game Boy, first removing the original LCD screen. Of course, he also made a video of his work, which you can find below, where we can see him cutting the console’s body, repositioning the internal hardware to make more space and using hot glue (lots of hot glue) to hold it all together.
As always, to put on a show, James seems to act very crudely, but the end result is a Game Boy that works again, a sign that he knows exactly what he’s doing. Unfortunately, CRT screens consume much more electricity than LCD ones, so this marvel can only be played for two minutes and five seconds. Evidently, normal batteries won’t last.
Of course, the portable nature of the console also goes to waste in its modded form. In short, take it as a curiosity that demonstrates how, if you want, you can obtain truly extraordinary results, starting from rather ordinary objects.
