Back from our journey to discover the rarest Game Boys of all time, we look with curiosity at the project carried out by Games_for_James, a video game enthusiast with a passion for modding who thought it would be a good idea to transform a Game Boy by replacing the original screen with a CRT monitor.
The author of this unusual fan made project, who has specialized over the years in the creation of unusual hardware mods for consoles and various electronic devices, shows the fruits of his work in an interesting explanatory video that retraces every step of his ‘reengineered version’ of the Game Boy.
To achieve this feat, James had to unsolder all the components of the Nintendo portable console’s motherboard and modify its external casing to make room for, yes, the CRT screen of a video intercom.
Granted, the YouTuber’s project certainly doesn’t shine for elegance and practicality, but it certainly provides a much more immersive and detailed gaming experience thanks to the superior definition of the screen used. In addition to the heavy design changes and sacrifices in terms of ergonomics, the main weak point of this fan-made revision of the Game Boy is its battery life: the battery integrated into the Nintendo console can only guarantee a few minutes of gameplay, due to the real energy drain of the CRT screen.
Before leaving you with the YouTuber’s video, we remind you that on the pages of Aroged.it you can find our in-depth analysis on the best color of the Game Boy, which is obviously the transparent one.
