Deadpool & Wolverine dominated the box office again in its second weekend. Newcomers like Trap: No Way Out with Josh Hartnett had no chance against the Marvel blockbuster, which is currently breaking one record after another.
And now Deadpool is living up to the name he gave himself in director Shawn Levy’s superhero film. Wade Wilson repeatedly refers to himself as Marvel Jesus – the savior of the “True Timeline” in the MCU. But what has Deadpool & Wolverine achieved in the USA?
Deadpool overtakes Jesus at the box office
Even before the theatrical release of Deadpool & Wolverine, it was already clear that part 3 would also be an R-rated film aimed specifically at an adult audience. No other film in the popular Marvel Cinematic Universe has had this age rating to date. For Marvel and Disney, however, the risk was more than worth it.
Just two weeks after its debut, Deadpool & Wolverine has managed to become the most successful R-rated film of all time in the USA. With a total of 395 million US dollars, the Marvel hit has now left “The Passion of the Christ” behind. A record that has been unchallenged in US cinemas for over 20 years.
Will Deadpool & Wolverine be the next billion-dollar hit for Marvel?
In general, the current superhero film with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is well on its way to breaking the infamous billion-dollar milestone at the box office. The blockbuster currently has around 824 million US dollars worldwide. In the long history of cinema, there has only been one R-rated film that has grossed over a billion US dollars – the DC work “Joker” released in 2019 with actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Marvel Studios should also be relieved that an MCU film is finally attracting audiences to the cinema again. Since 2021 and the opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home, no other MCU project has broken the billion mark. We will find out whether Deadpool & Wolverine was really able to help the MCU get back on track by the results of Captain America: Brave New World, which will be released on February 13, 2025.
