The Los Angeles-based studio Sony Santa Monica is probably best known for one series: God of War. After all, the game studio, founded in 1999, was primarily responsible for developing the titles starring the grumpy god-hater Kratos. But that seems to be changing now.
Fans of Kratos need to be very strong now: Apparently we can’t expect a new God of War any time soon. Since the first part in 2005, the studio Sony Santa Monica has been responsible for the series and with the 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarök, they are also giving us a new, more emotional version of Kratos.

However, Sony Santa Monica wants to move on to new shores, as a LinkedIn profile of an employee now reveals. He worked for the studio as lead character artist until 2019 and left the company in the meantime. Since April 2024, he has been back on board as character supervisor, which doesn’t mean anything bad for God of War fans.
His role description, however, is more specific and sobering. It states: “(I) oversee and lead character development on an unannounced project and help the studio continually raise the bar for character development.”
There have been rumors within the gaming industry for some time about a new project based on Sony Santa Monica’s own brand. The director is also said to have already been decided, with Cory Barlog taking the lead. He was director of God of War in 2018, but not of Ragnarök. In interviews, he has repeatedly stated how much he would like to develop his own brand and idea and bring it to market.
If there is anything new happening, you will of course hear about it from us.
