Takuro Mizobe: Unstructured Pocket Pairs to Create AAA Scale Games
With the profit from Palworld, PocketPair could go “beyond AAA” with their next title, but they intend to keep things sustainable and “on an indie scale,” according to CEOhttps://t.co/ez5eE2OFEV— AUTOMATON WEST (@AUTOMATON_ENG) August 5, 2024
Speaking with Game*Spark, Takuro Mizobe revealed that Pocket Pair plans to see how far the company can go while still maintaining an “indie scale.”
“Given the global trend for AAA games, it is becoming difficult to develop a game with a large team and ensure that the game is successful,” said Mizobe.
Before Palworld, Craftopia was created using the small profits from Overdungeon. In turn, Craftopia’s success became the foundation for Palworld’s development.
Pocket Pair has gradually grown thanks to this “snowball effect,” but Mizobe says they have no intention of continuing to expand in this manner.
“Although we don’t talk about it publicly, Palworld’s sales are in the tens of billions of yen,” Mizobe said. “If we develop the next game based on these results, as we have done in the past, not only will the scale surpass AAA, but we won’t be able to keep up with this in terms of our organizational maturity, or rather, we are simply not structured for something like that.”
As a game creator, Mizobe is also not interested in AAA games: “Also, if you ask me if there is a game I would like to make with a very big budget, there is not. I want to pursue interesting ideas as an indie game.”
Additionally, Mizobe commented on Pocket Pair’s growth so far “thanks to the indie gaming community.”
