According to reports, Warner Bros. Discovery could sell part of its video game business. There is talk of “smaller assets”.
Warner Bros. Discovery could divest itself of part of its video game business. Financial Times (via VGC) and refers to unspecified sources.
According to the report, the media giant is seeking to sell smaller assets. The aim of these sales is to partially offset the almost 70 percent decline in the share price since the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery in 2022.
In addition to selling part of the video game division, the company is reportedly considering selling the Polish television station TVN.
NetherRealm, Avalanche Studio and more
Warner Bros. owns several video game studios. These include Avalanche Software (“Hogwarts Legacy”), Rocksteady (“Suicide Squad”), TT Games (Lego games), NetherRealm (“Mortal Kombat”), Monolith Productions (“Middle Earth: Shadow of War”) and Warner Bros. Games Montréal (“Gotham Knights”).
Warner Bros. emphasized earlier this year that the company’s gaming business revolves around four major intellectual properties, all of which are billion-dollar deals: “Mortal Kombat,” “Game of Thrones,” “DC” and “Harry Potter.”
“Squad: Kill the Justice League,” on the other hand, was a flop and caused $200 million in lost revenue. This was where the plan announced last year to increase ongoing revenue through live services and multiplatform and free-to-play expansions, while largely deviating from the three- or four-year production cycles of new games, failed.
It is unclear which assets it could affect and whether the sale of a studio is also being considered. The company is expanding in this area: last month, Warner Bros. took over Player First Games, the studio behind the free-to-play fighting game “MultiVersus”.
When will Hogwarts Legacy 2 start making money?
After “Hogwarts Legacy”, which is based on the “Harry Potter” universe, was one of the best-selling games of 2023 and is still making the cash registers ring, the sequel is likely to follow sooner rather than later. There was recently a glimmer of hope here:
But the “Harry Potter” universe is also to be monetized on an ongoing basis. Instead of just bringing a one-off console game onto the market, the company envisions a live service where people can live, work, build and play in this world. First, however, they will arm themselves with a broom.
