The Game Boy Advance hosted a huge amount of memorable games and unmissable ports of great classics from the past, quickly establishing itself as one of the best portable consoles ever made. And there were certainly some productions capable of shining.
Below we list 5 truly incredible GBA games, either for their original concept or for their general exceptional quality:
Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hands
We are in front of one of the most atypical RPGs ever, the fruit of the genius of Hideo Kojima who showed off his great creativity also on the Nintendo portable console. Botkai The Sun is in Your Hands based its gameplay on sunlight to be captured through a special sensor mounted on the cartridge, thus allowing you to exploit it to your advantage during the adventure. In 2024 Botkai turned 21 and Kojima himself wanted to celebrate his game, still considered one of the most interesting ever released by the GBA title park.
Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga
Among the various quality role-playing games offered by the GBA, Mario & Luigi SuperStar Saga stands out not only for its general playful and aesthetic beauty, but also for the strong vein of humor that gave it a unique and inimitable personality, enough to catapult it in an instant into the Olympus of the best games for its platform. If you want to enjoy a light-hearted and carefree adventure that’s also full of creativity, the original Mario & Luigi is perfect to rediscover, perhaps while waiting for Mario & Luigi: Charged Brothers coming to Switch on November 7, 2024.
Metroid Fusion
8 years after the timeless Super Metroid, Samus Aran returns as the protagonist of a 2D adventure capable of keeping you glued to the screen, and if possible it proves to be even darker and more disturbing than the past iterations of the brand. The credit goes not only to a perfectly programmed claustrophobic setting, but also to the fearsome SA-X, a seemingly immortal enemy that knows how to terrorize with every appearance. Metroid Fusion is a real pearl, unmissable for every GBA owner.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Of course, a completely original Zelda on GBA was a must, and with The Legend of Zelda The Minish Cap the Big N hits the mark once again. With the intriguing concept of Link shrinking to create new gameplay dynamics, The Minish Cap is a heart-warming adventure with evocative atmospheres and dungeons more beautiful than the last. In short, The Legend of Zelda to the nth degree.
WarioWare Twisted
The original WarioWare was already one of the most brilliant and original games on the GBA, but if anything, WarioWare Twisted goes even further. Thanks to the motion sensor incorporated into the cartridge, Nintendo was able to create a new series of crazy microgames all based on the console’s movements, thus giving life to even more engaging and unpredictable gameplay dynamics. It’s a real shame that WarioWare Twisted has not officially landed in Europe despite its release being in the plans: it would have been a great success in our territories too.
