There are a variety of scaling technologies available today, and Microsoft unveiled its own a few months ago. It’s called Automatic Super Resolution, and the Xbox team has only released it for PC at the moment. But the announcement also said that Microsoft is aiming to offer it on as many devices as possible in the future.
Auto SR from Xbox is a little different from other companies. The idea is as follows. Existing games are output at a lower resolution using new tools, which allows for a higher frame rate. Then, AI-based algorithms are used to improve visuals and detail, as well as to scale the original resolution.
The Xbox team itself notes that this technology is distinguished by its simplicity. Windows players simply need to enable the new feature and launch a game that supports it. The technology itself is currently at an early stage of development, so only a limited number of games support it.
Techies at Digital Foundry have been testing the new Auto SR feature from Xbox, and you can see their findings below. Overall, the experts were pleased with the feature, noting that Auto SR significantly improves detail, especially in blurry areas, and makes the image sharper. The technology is also useful in games with bright colors and outlines that are easier to process, such as Borderlands 3. The video also compares Xbox’s Auto SR to DLSS and FSR.
It’s worth mentioning that Phil Spencer also took notice of Digital Foundry’s Auto SR review and reposted their analysis.
