Data from Sony’s latest financial report shows that PS5 sales continue to be in line with those of PS4, making a comparison for comparable periods, therefore in similar time frames. As the chart below shows, in its fifteenth quarter PS5 sold a total of 61.7 million units, where PS4 had sold 63.5.
They go hand in hand
The latest generation console is still below that of the previous generation, but with a very narrow gap, which amounts to less than 2 million units. In short, we can talk about sales almost aligned, net of some considerations that need to be made to better clarify the picture, which could even be favorable to PS5.
The graph showing the sales trend of the two consoles
Incidentally, the PS4 launched on November 15, 2013 in America and November 29 in Europe, with the PS4 Pro launching on November 10, 2016. The PS5 launched on November 19, 2020, without yet receiving a Pro model (which is still rumored).
Furthermore, the PlayStation 4 had a base price of 399 euros, with the price being cut over the years to become more advantageous (the price range of 399 euros was occupied by the PS4 Pro), while the PlayStation 5 did not undergo price cuts and, indeed, saw an increase of 50 euros. In short, the current conditions are decidedly more adverse for the PS5, also by virtue of a smaller number of first-party exclusives compared to the PS4. Despite this, sales have remained at the same level, a sign of the strong attachment to the brand by gamers.
