Reddit is preparing to begin testing an AI-powered search that will offer “content summaries and recommendations” on the search results page, CEO Steve Huffman said in a call with investors after the platform’s quarterly earnings report.
Integrating AI into the search function will help the platform’s users “dive deeper” into content and discover new Reddit communities; the experiment will begin this year. The new format will use both the platform’s own technologies and third-party solutions, Mr. Huffman explained. Something similar was expected to appear soon: in May, the company announced a partnership with OpenAI. The AI developer allowed the platform to use its large language models and helped delegate some moderation powers, in exchange for the right to use Reddit’s materials to train its systems. The platform entered into a similar agreement with Google earlier this year.
AI technology was a big topic in the conversation with investors and analysts. Huffman talked about the quality of machine translation on Reddit and noted that the platform has a growing community of users from France. Translation into German, Spanish and Portuguese is currently being expanded. Reddit has already introduced its second quarterly report since going public. The company’s revenue for the second quarter was $281.2 million, which beat Wall Street analysts’ forecasts of $253.8 million; the number of weekly active users was 342.3 million, which is 57% more than a year earlier.
