Square Enix has released its latest earnings report, and unfortunately, those still waiting for official sales figures for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be disappointed. The sequel’s commercial success remains shrouded in mystery, with the publisher reporting a year-over-year decline in game sales for the latest quarter.
The 18.4% decline isn’t a huge surprise, though. Last year, Final Fantasy 16 was only a month or so away from launch, and Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters came to PS4 in April. Even if Rebirth had been a sales titan, Square Enix still wouldn’t have expected it to make up the difference within a few months of its release.
To be fair, the publisher probably won’t be too bothered by the sales drop anyway, as it still managed to post a profit. However, this is largely due to the company’s rather aggressive restructuring, which has seen it shed a number of unfinished projects worth around £112 million.
And of course, you can always count on Final Fantasy 14. Although this report does not include the latest expansion Dawntrail, the ever-popular MMORPG still saw year-over-year growth in sales and profits. Presumably, this growth is due to the launch of the aforementioned expansion.
Overall, Square Enix looks a little healthier, but its next big release will likely come under extra pressure.
