The 90s were magical in the video game world thanks also to the rise of First Person Shooters, a true symbol of gaming at the time especially on PC. And it was right there that legendary names of the genre saw the light: if the first that come to mind are Doom and Duke Nukem you are on the right track.
We are in fact talking about two symbols of the FPS of that decade, even bigger than another historic name like Wolfenstein 3D. The original Doom of 1993 in particular was a real revolution not only for its stellar playability but also for its unique atmospheres, as brutal as they are engaging: seeing the Doomguy slaughter demons for the first time in his “career” while in the background the adrenaline rises more and more thanks to a soundtrack of applause is an experience that every player must try at least once in their life. The subsequent Doom II may not have had the same impact as its illustrious predecessor given the strong similarities between the two games, but it certainly contributed to making the name of the id Software work even more immortal among video game enthusiasts. The brand continues with strength even today and the release of Doom The Dark Ages is awaited in glory during 2025.
Duke Nukem, on the other hand, took a while to explode, also because the first two games of the 3D Realms series (at the time still known as Apogee Software) released in the first half of the 90s were set in Platform style. However, everything changed with the third game, Duke Nukem 3D, which not only brought the brand to three dimensions but also turned it upside down by transforming it into an FPS. And Duke Nukem 3D took just a moment to become a cult phenomenon, not only thanks to its frenetic and spectacular gameplay, but also for the charisma and over-the-top personality of the eponymous protagonist, a concentration of effective jokes that immediately entered the collective imagination of fans. Unfortunately, Duke Nukem has disappeared from the radar for many years now, but the impact he had with Duke Nukem 3D will remain forever imprinted in history.
So, which between Doom and Duke is the most iconic FPS of the 90s? The answer is up to you, as you recall your experiences with these timeless classics.
