Apparently it is possible to use PlayStation VR2 on PC without having to buy the expensive official adapter launched on the market by Sony, although this is only valid for gamers with specific video cards.
As indicated by the RoadToVR portal and reports from Steam users, it is possible to connect the Sony headset to your PC by connecting it via USB-C cable directly to the GPU, but only as long as it has a VirtualLink port.
Only a few graphics cards have a VirtualLink port
For those who don’t know, VirtualLink is a USB-C standard designed specifically to simplify the connection of VR headsets, combining power, video and data transfer with a single cable. Unfortunately, it became obsolete within a few years, despite the idea that it would be widely and permanently widespread.
An NVIDIA graphics card that has a VirtualLink port
As a result, this port is absent from virtually every graphics card released in recent years. Instead, it can be found on some RTX 20 models and its Super variants, or on AMD Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, and Radeon VII GPUs. Even in these cases, compatibility is not guaranteed. For example, for the RTX 2060, only the Founder’s Edition and a custom version have a VirtualLink port.
In short, it is not a widespread standard and is limited to slightly older cards, but if you are lucky enough to own a GPU with a VirtualLink port and are interested in the world of VR, you can connect and play with PlayStation VR2 without having to spend the €59.99 required for Sony’s official adapter.
