Microsoft is working on a consumer mixed reality (MR) headset focused on interacting with media content and games. For this project, the software giant is collaborating with Samsung Display, which will develop and supply OLEDoS (OLED on silicon) displays for the headset. Microsoft’s MR headset is expected to hit the market in 2026.
According to the source, Samsung will supply Microsoft with hundreds of thousands of OLEDoS displays for mass production of mixed reality headsets. The Microsoft headset is expected to be mass produced only after the specifications of the new OLEDoS displays are finalized. It is noted that the commercial launch of the device will take place “at the earliest” in 2026.
Last year, Samsung set up a new division called M Project, which is developing OLEDoS panels. The division is headed by Samsung Display Vice President Jaebeom Choi, who also leads the Micro Display team at Samsung Display. It is also known that components for OLEDoS displays are developed by Samsung’s System LSI division.
Interestingly, Samsung’s mobile division MX Business has already received samples of OLEDoS panels from Samsung Display for its own mixed reality device, but has chosen Sony as the supplier of such displays. According to the source, this has put a lot of pressure on Samsung Display, which is eager to succeed in its partnership with Microsoft and hopes that Samsung MX Business will still be interested in its OLEDoS panels.
