Sony Interactive Entertainment shared up-to-date information regarding the sales volume of the PlayStation 5 game console in its latest financial report. As of June 30, it had sold more than 61.7 million units. By the way, the PlayStation 5 surpassed the 50 million mark in the second half of 2023.
In the last quarter, 2.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles were sold. This is less than both the previous quarter (4.5 million units) and the same period last year (3.3 million). In general, Sony expected a slowdown in PlayStation 5 sales, but the quarterly results were lower than analysts’ forecasts (3 million consoles). Compared to the PlayStation 4, it sold more units in the same period since its release.
The good news for Sony was that revenue in the Games & Network Services segment increased 12% year-over-year, while operating profit increased 32% from $335 million to $443 million. This was due to currency effects, as well as growth in first-person games (especially Helldivers 2) and online services, mainly PlayStation Plus.
