Sony announced that it has shipped over 61 million PS5 consoles, but that’s not the only interesting data that emerged from the report to illustrate its Q1 FY2024 financial results.
We thus discover that the revenues of software and services exceed 3.3 billion dollars with a growth of almost 20% compared to the same period last year, in particular the sales of add-ons such as expansions, season passes and DLC have grown by 37%.
In the first quarter of the fiscal year (i.e. the period from April 1 to June 30, 2024), 53.6 million PS5 games were sold, 80% of which were digital. In the same period in 2023, PS5 games were sold 56.5 million, thus recording a decline in software sales on an annual basis.
As mentioned, hardware sales are down year-on-year with 2.4 million PS5s sold last quarter versus 3.3 million in the same period of 2023. Services seem to be doing well, with Sony saying it is satisfied with the 116 million monthly active users on the PlayStation ecosystem (compared to 108 million in the same period last year) with growth in services driven “largely by PlayStation Plus” even if no precise data is provided on this matter.
Microsoft has over 500 million monthly active players on Xbox, a tally that includes active players of Blizzard games like World of Warcraft as well as players of Candy Crush Saga, one of the most successful mobile games of all time.
