Gamers who prefer PCs to consoles can now connect Sony’s PlayStation VR2 (PSVR2) virtual reality headset to their computers and play thousands of games from the SteamVR library, including the iconic Half-Life: Alyx. However, there are some limitations.
But here’s the catch: The PSVR2 wasn’t originally designed to work with a PC, so connecting it to a computer requires an adapter, which is sold at some retailers and directly from Sony for $59.99. Considering the headset itself costs $549.99, it’s not nearly as attractive an option as you might think.
And that’s not all. Many of the PSVR2’s key features, including HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback on the controllers, are not available when connected to a PC. And Sony hasn’t said yet whether they’ll be coming in the future. The PSVR2’s biggest selling point remains its OLED displays with a resolution of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye, support for games with a refresh rate of 90 and 120 Hz, and a 110° field of view. The headset is supported by the SteamVR platform.
Sony has provided a list of system requirements for a PC to which the headset can be connected:
Windows 10/11 OS (64-bit); processor not lower than Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 architecture and later); RAM from 8 GB; graphics Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 and higher (Turing architecture and later), video cards Nvidia GeForce RTX series, AMD Radeon RX 5500XT/6500XT and later, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and higher or AMD Radeon RX 6600XT and higher recommended; video output DisplayPort 1.4 (standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort connector); direct USB connection; Bluetooth 4.0 and later.
