It’s no secret: Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was a $200 million flop and the poor numbers for Rocksteady’s game contributed to sinking WB Games’ profits.
Specifically, compared to last year, Warner Bros. Games saw its earnings drop by 41%, the blame would be largely due to the commercial flop of Suicide Squad and the less than incredible performance of Mortal Kombat 1, launched in September last year and received positively but apparently unable to capitalize on its success in the long term.
A merciless decline for the publisher of Hogwarts Legacy, the latter was the best-selling game of 2023 with over 22 million copies and has now reached 24 million copies distributed, continuing to sell well.
The giant Warner Bros. Discovery is in serious financial trouble (the latest report shows revenues of 9.1 billion dollars and losses of 10 billion dollars) and is reportedly considering selling the gaming division to raise cash. Video games are considered one of the company’s “minor” businesses and for this reason the management would have no problem selling WB Games.
There have been numerous cuts in Warner’s video game division in recent months: NetherRealm’s mobile team was shut down and as a result Mortal Kombat Mobile will be abandoned at the end of the year.
