The wait will soon be over. After a long wait, the film adaptation of the crazy Borderlands shooter series is finally coming to cinemas. Then numerous fans can see for themselves whether the big screen adaptation of the Gearbox shooter can compete with current blockbusters such as Deadpool & Wolverine or Twisters. Even before the official premiere, more and more reviews are appearing from the specialist press who were able to see the film in advance. Is it the hoped-for success or an absolute dud?
When will Borderlands be in theaters?
When the film adaptation of Borderlands finally hits theaters one of these days, it also means the end of a damn long ordeal. Filming, which took place around the Hungarian capital Budapest, was actually completed almost exactly three years ago. Although there was a forced break in between due to the corona pandemic, most of the material was already in the can. This was followed by extensive reshoots and a few delays. In the USA, Borderlands (buy now €34.99) will now be released on August 9, 2024, in Germany, fans will have to wait until August 22. But was the wait actually worth it?
How good (or bad) is the Borderlands movie?
The omens for the film adaptation of Borderlands were not all that bad. After all, the producers were able to attract numerous Hollywood stars such as Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings), Kevin Hart (Ride Along), Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Jack Black (Jumanji) to the project. But the opinions published so far unfortunately speak a very clear language.
Hardly any of the critics have a single good word to say about Borderlands. The film adaptation seems to have been a huge flop. For Josh Blumenkranz, for example, it was the “worst film of the year so far”. It lacks both heart and emotion. Only Jack Black’s humor can provide a few small rays of hope. Miles Lawrence even describes the Borderlands film as a downright “abomination of an adaptation”. Critic Adriano Caporusso uses similar words, reporting on a “lifeless and unfunny” work that has simply become “a disaster”.
