Modern racing games are usually extremely extensive. This includes a career mode in which you not only drive races, but also manage an entire racing team. In contrast, “Super Woden GP II” from solo developer ViJuDa relies on a retro approach – and not just visually. Reason enough to take a closer look at the racer on the Xbox.
Racing like before
All modes are structured in the classic “Gran Turismo” style. You choose a game mode on a map, listen to the soundtrack or visit one of the many car dealerships to buy new cars. There are no licensed cars, but the wide selection is clearly inspired by real racing cars and often offers paint jobs based on real racing cars. You then drive mainly in two modes.
In arcade mode, you drive a set of cars around the track under time pressure without any competition. If you don’t finish a race quickly enough, you lose a credit and only have two more attempts before it’s game over. This is about straightforward gameplay. It’s easy to get started, you don’t have to fight other drivers, and the time limits are challenging but not unfair. The gameplay itself feels good and varied. Whether you’re driving a street race or a rally, you can practically feel the ground. The controls are direct, and in no time at all you’ll be drifting around corners and following the fastest line.

In addition to the arcade mode, there is a career in which you drive your own cars in various cups, racing weekends, rallies and endurance races. For successfully completing races, you receive stars that you can use to unlock further events. In addition, first place in an event often gives you a new car that you can use in one of the next races. The events are usually limited to certain cars, classes or levels. Finding out which cars you can use in which event is a bit complicated. You have to select the event and go to the detailed information. But there is only a list of the cars allowed there. You cannot find out whether you have one of these cars or not. Even if you do have one, you cannot select it directly. Instead, you have to go back to the garage and look for one of the corresponding models in the list. It is very complicated and not user-friendly.
