Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League appears to have caused Warner Bros. Games to lose 41% in its latest fiscal quarter, or at least all signs point to the ill-fated Rocksteady Studios title.
Of course, since this is a year-on-year comparison, it’s clear that few could have competed with Hogwarts Legacy, which in the same period in 2023 saw strong growth in the publisher’s earnings, ending up selling something like 24 million copies.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, for its part, achieved disappointing sales by Warner Bros.’ own admission, having invested significant sums in the development of a game that should have also been able to count on the popularity of James Gunn’s film, which in turn achieved poor results at the box office.
Overall, Warner Bros. Discovery’s situation was not idyllic in the last quarter: revenue was 9.7 billion dollars but against overall losses of 10 billion, of which 9.1 related to impairment charges.
Gaming division at risk?
According to some rumors, Warner Bros. Discovery could soon sell its video game division to raise cash and try to solve its current problems, but it’s not the first time that such a solution has been talked about and we don’t know how much sense it makes to sell off franchises like Hogwarts Legacy.
In general, the intellectual properties that Warner Bros. can count on have enormous potential: it would just need to be exploited in a sensible way, which is basically the opposite of what was done with Kill the Justice League and its live service setting.
