With Microsoft potentially making a comeback to acquire WB Games, Warner Bros. Discovery executives say they’re ready to embrace a strategy not too dissimilar from the one Disney has implemented with Marvel and other IPs licensed to third-party developers to make video games.
Confirming the search for capital to overcome the crisis of WB Discovery, CEO David Zaslav took the opportunity offered by the latest meeting with investors of the American entertainment giant to discuss the future of the company and, specifically, the activities carried out by the company in the video game sector.
In a specific passage of his speech, Zaslav explains that “we have 11 development studios and we own a lot of intellectual property, but there is a lot of interest from third-party players who want to exploit these IPs to develop licensed video games, and that is something we are looking at. As JB Perrette (president of Global Streaming and Gaming at WB Discovery, ed.) explained, we need to grow and the intellectual property that we own has a huge value in the video game industry, and that is a value that we want to exploit”.
According to what Zaslav suggested, therefore, WB Discovery does not intend to deprive itself of its video game division and the experience gained by the teams that gravitate around the galaxy of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment but, in any case, believes that the time has come to open up to other players in the industry by allowing the licensed development of video games focused on its most famous IPs, such as those related to the DC Comics multiverse or Harry Potter, Game of Thrones or Mortal Kombat. And you, what do you think about it? Do you think that granting licenses to third-party players is the best choice for WB Discovery’s IPs or, on the contrary, do you think it would be better to sell the entire Warner Bros. Games division to one of the giants in the sector? Let us know with a comment!
