Meta has decided to officially close Ready At Dawn, a studio known for games such as God of War for PSP, Daxter and The Order 1886 which has already suffered a wave of layoffs during 2023. The company therefore ceases to exist after 21 years of honorable service.
Over the course of two decades of activity, the Californian company has offered the public numerous quality games, from the beginning on PlayStation platforms to the latest VR productions for Oculus Rift. But which was the best Ready At Dawn game? Consulting Metacritic, it emerges that God of War Chains of Olympus for PSP was the title most warmly received by international critics, awarded with an excellent metascore of 91 that even made it the best game ever for PSP.
Ready At Dawn also handled the Wii port of Okami for Capcom, which instead received a Metacritic score of 90. Finally, closing the podium of its best games is the original Lone Echo for Oculus Rift, which took home a Metacritic score of 89. The much-discussed The Order 1886 was one of the company’s least convincing games with its average of 63, but if we had to name the worst Ready At Dawn game ever, that record would go to Deformers, published under the GameTrust label by GameStop and not going beyond 60 in the PS4 version (but which drops to 49 in the Xbox One version, an average based on a smaller number of reviews).
Aside from a couple of less convincing games, however, the average quality of Ready At Dawn productions has always remained at a commendable level: games like Daxter, God of War Ghost of Sparta, Echo Arena and Lone Echo II (the last one ever produced by the company) have all received a positive reception from the international press. The video game industry has therefore lost a valuable software house that still had a lot to give to its fans.
